Coming Soon: Communication Laynards

For those presenting with speech and language communication needs, communicating with others may be difficult. We have created laynards with symbols of important core words from TD Snap images on nevertear polyester cards to provide portable support to those that may need it. The symbols we use are widely used on communication boards in schools, playing fields and public spaces around Ireland, allowing for continuity.

The aim is not to replace high tech AAC but rather to provide an alternative when communication may break down.

We have selected 17 core words through parent and professional feedback and hope to expand this going forward. These will be launched and available on our shop - so keep an eye and ear out!

Modelling involves demonstrating how to communicate using AAC. We do so without expectation of imitation or response. The focus is on speaking naturally, showing the symbol, and incorporating it into interactions. For example, show the ‘Eat’ symbol and say ‘’I’m hungry, let’s eat!’. This will help individuals learn the language of AAC.

Mistakes are normal and expected - learning AAC takes time for everyone involved! Encourage commenting or protesting as well as requesting with the symbols - eg for the ‘Like’ symbol - we can use the phrase ‘I like them’ or ‘I don’t like that’ ! Support all curiosity and acknowledge all attempts!

We are thrilled to be working with Cork based PD Signs on the creation of these cards with the support as always from SafeCare Technologies. Our laynards have been provided by Wristbands Ireland.
